Flopsy’s Diary: Page seven
Dear Mommy, I love you. I have been learning how to do a lot of things like making maple syrup. It is delicious, even though I only got a lick.
To make the sap they drill a hole in a maple tree. I wondered why, until Thor told me that you tap the tree so you can get the sap out. I wonder if there are any treat batter trees? Then Audrey would just have to bake them!
The sap is yummy but the syrup is yummyer. Thor told me that the Sugar maple tree uses about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. Other maple trees need a lot more. Why do they use so much!?
After that Adrian and “Daddy” made a little fire pit. Then they started a fire in the back yard. Don’t touch the fire or you might get burnt! I did not like the smoke in my eyes either! But it was fun watching the sap start to boil. Did you know it gets foam on top? It does not taste very good, I tried it when Adrian skimmed some off the top and threw it in the bushes.
Then Audrey and Megan scrubbed some large and deep pans very clean and got all of the soap out. They soaped the outsides of the pans. I’m not sure why but you do! Thor did not know either. He did say not to get the soap inside the pan or the syrup will taste a little soapy. Yuck 😛 !
They keep telling me that they have a surprise for me this week! Hopefully it is not like last time’s surprise; it was having to eat Thor’s food! My food ran out. Now Thor has to share with me. Audrey says it is the exactly the same but I do not believe her. It does not even come from a bag, they get it from the garage! It sometimes is cold! It doesn’t taste as good in my bowl as when I steal from Thor’s bowl.
Otherwise I have been guessing what my surprise is! Maybe a whole bag of treats just for me! Or a HUGE jar of maple syrup for us to share. Or a new toy! I am wondering what it is, because I hope when you get home you can share it with me.
Love,
Flopsy
